Join me as we recreate Grandma’s Salisbury Steak, a classic dish that, when paired with creamy mashed potatoes, is sure to delight the taste buds of your entire family.
Ingredients:
Beef Patties:
- 1 pound ground beef (85/15 blend works well)
- 1/4 cup bread crumbs (preferably panko bread crumbs)
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 3/4 teaspoon oregano
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (for pan)
Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef stock
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 6 oz. mushrooms, sliced
- 1 small white onion, sliced into half moons
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, beaten egg, ketchup, Dijon mustard, oregano, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
- Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat and add olive oil. While the pan heats up, divide the beef mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties.
- Place the beef patties in the hot frying pan and cook for approximately 3 minutes on each side, or until they develop a golden-brown crust. Once cooked, remove the patties from the pan and set them aside.
- In the same frying pan, add the butter and flour, stirring constantly over medium heat for about a minute. This will create a roux, which will serve as the base for the delicious gravy.
- Slowly pour in the beef stock, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and onion powder, stirring continuously to combine the ingredients thoroughly. Allow the mixture to come to a rolling boil.
- Next, add the sliced mushrooms and onions to the pan, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir gently to incorporate the vegetables into the gravy.
- Return the beef patties to the pan, nestling them into the simmering gravy. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the pan, and let it cook for approximately 10 minutes. This will allow the flavors to meld together and the patties to soak up the rich, savory gravy.
- While the Salisbury Steak finishes cooking, prepare a batch of creamy mashed potatoes to accompany the dish. Serve the Salisbury Steak hot, with a generous ladle of gravy, alongside a helping of velvety mashed potatoes.
