DIY Rustic Valentines Decor

Every now and again I feel like our Seasonal Decor is in need of a little refresh. That’s when it’s time to turn to crafting, my friends! This DIY Rustic Valentines Decor is the perfect addition to your Valentines Day Decor. It is a great Valentine’s decoration to put on an entryway table or fireplace mantle. You can even separate the pieces and place them on separate shelves on your built ins! We love the cute XO pattern of this craft and the best part is that it is SO easy!

We love making crafting easy so each month we design a Craft Kit that is trendy, affordable, and easy for anyone to do. We put together the big supplies like wood and vinyl, so you don’t have to! All you need is our Craft Kit and a few supplies that you probably already have on hand. Our Craft Kits are so fun and make crafting easy for you! Be sure to watch for a new kit each month here.

This month we designed a super cute DIY Rustic Decor piece for Valentine’s Day. I’m going to walk you through each step to make this craft from the bare bones of the craft kit, to a beautiful piece of decor that you can use each year for Valentine’s Day.

DIY Rustic Valentines Decor

Supplies needed:

Step One

Paint all four pieces of wood with the Antique Craft Wax. You could also use stain if you have that on hand. It is important to let the Wax or Stain completely dry before moving on to the next steps.

Step Two

Once the Antique Wax has completely dried take your white paint and chip paint brush and dry brush the white paint over all 4 wooden pieces. This painting technique is a reverse antiquing. (To see how to do this technique you can watch a video here.) I want the dark stain to peek through the white paint. It makes the wood look really old, and I LOVE antique decor! If the old worn look isn’t your thing, you can totally just paint these boards with straight white paint.

Step Three

Wait for the paint to dry. It is really important that you wait until the paint has completely dried before moving onto the next step. If your paint isn’t completely dry then it could chip off and ruin your entire craft during the next steps. If you are on a time crunch and want to get this craft finished quickly in one sitting then I highly recommend getting a heat gun. I use my heat gun all the time and it really is a life saver! You can get my favorite one here.

When you are all done painting, and everything is dry, the wood should look like this. I love the way the antiquing turns out.

Step Four

Now take the 2 smaller pieces of wood and apply the vinyl stencils onto them. (You can see how to apply your vinyl here.) Try to center them as good as possible. They should look like the picture below when applied.

Step Five

Next it is time to fill in the heart stencils with your red paint. Paint inside the heart with your red paint, or any color you’d like the hearts to be. I used a smaller paint brush to fill them in and was very careful around the edges of the stencil to make sure the paint didn’t bleed over. Once the red paint is dry, peel the stencils off and look how STINKING cute they turned out!!

Step Six

You are done with the heart blocks, now it’s time to put the X together. Take the two longer pieces of wood and cross them over each other. I made sure I liked where they crossed before I glued them into place. Secure the 2 pieces together with some hot glue. You could also use E-6000 for a more secure bond.

Step Seven

Add the finishing touch to the X with your red and white bakers twine. Wrap the twine around the center of the X horizontally and tie it off in a knot on the back. Then wrap it around the center going vertically so it creates a criss crossing pattern with the jute you tied horizontally. You can use as much or as little jute as you want. I tied it around several times to get it to really stand out. Then use your hot glue gun to secure the end of the twine on the back.

And just like that you are finished with this adorable DIY Rustic Valentines Decor. Do you love this craft as much as we do? You can get the Valentines Day Craft Kit here and make it your own! I had so much fun creating it and hope it is something you will use for years to come in your Valentines Home Decor.  I love the Rustic feel of it and the painting techniques that were used, but you can always use any paint colors you’d like and make it to fit your style. That’s why we love the craft kits so much. Each person can make it in their own way to show off their own personality.

If you make this craft we would love to see your result! Tag us in your images on Facebook or Instagram at Doing What We Love with Holly & Renee. You can also see a full video of us making the craft on our facebook page here.
